Grizzly Mech Suit - Starhawk

The Grizzly suit was part of a DLC package for the Playstation3 game, Starhawk. This is a ride-able Mech where the pilot climbs up into the body cavity to control it. The Grizzly's purpose is to jump enormous distances, run fast and be powerful - all with a heavy, Hulk-like feel to it.

We stayed consistent with the Starhawk look and feel by making the Grizzly a rugged, construction-style vehicle with a lot of mechanical plausibility.

Hawk - Starhawk

The Hawk was the first vehicle I made for this game which also happens to be the main vehicle of the game.

After messing around with the initial concept, I incorporated a lot of real world mechanics and then applied a rugged, re-purposed construction vehicle look and feel to it. The design was well received and in turn, was applied to all other vehicles and helped dictate the look and feel of the overall game.

The unique thing about this particular Mech is that it is to transform - similar to Star-Scream from Transformers. This posed an interesting challenge for me as I had to essentially model two different versions of the Hawk, (one in Biped-form and one in flight-mode) and then make it mechanically plausible (enough) to facilitate a transform from one mode to the other.

Sidewinder - Starhawk

The Sidewinder is a Jet Bike that hovers above ground. It has independent suspension on all four corners and features articulated parts in the rear, which fan out during a jump.

Razorback - Starhawk

I took a lot of design cues from real life Jeeps and Trophy Trucks to make this truck as mechanically believable as possible.

Ox - Starhawk

I looked at construction machines for mechanical inspiration, but sculpted the rear portion of the vehicle based on actual military tanks. It features a 6-wheel independent suspension design and 4-wheel steering for extra tight maneuvering. The front-end 'cab' of the vehicle went through several iterations before coming to the final design.

JetPack - Starhawk

Lots of attention was given to the way the JetPack would have to fold up on the player's back without being too big or obtrusive. Many test animations later, we got it to fold naturally while maintaining the integrity of the design.
